On Rhode Island the scenic area surrounding Little Compton is especially popular with both locals and visitors. With a population of only three and a half thousand, it’s easy to see that this small town isn’t renowned for its lively nightlife or its shopping opportunities: its fame relates primarily to its natural beauty and its wine production.
Sakonnet Vineyards gained its name from the area’s original inhabitants and is famous for the exceptionally high quality of its wines. Its presence on the Rhode Island real estate market has already made waves, since it represents such an important part of local life.
This enormous plot of land includes everything that the expert vintner could possibly require, including a hospitality centre with a stylish tasting room, sales area, video room where visitors can learn about the wine-making process, a commercial kitchen, conference area and four private offices.
During the 35 years of its existence Sakonnet Vineyards has won numerous awards for its wines, so the new owner will have a solid reputation to live up to. The winery itself consists of areas for processing and bottling, plus a laboratory, barrel room, case storage area and warehouse, all of which have been fitted with state-of-the-art equipment. There is also a mono-bloc bottling line housed in a ‘clean room’, featuring a bottle rinser, nitrogen sparger, filler, corker, foiler, and labeller.
Sakonnet Vineyards has dedicated 102 of its 169 acres to wine production, while an additional 67 acres has been subdivided into five residential properties. More than 36 acres has been dedicated specifically to vineyards, with red varieties that include Chardonnay, Gewurtzraminer and Vidal Blanc: reds are represented by Pinot Noir, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvingon and a grape called Chancellor, used in port. Sakonnet also produces some popular blends, sparkling wine and an ice wine.
If you have ever wished to promote your passion for fine wines into the realm of the practical, or watched the film Sideways and nodded in recognition at the two central characters’ obsession with wine, this is a property that will surely appeal to your inner vintner!
